The pest guide

Not sure what you have found?

Smádýrabókin is our illustrated guide to small creatures and pests found in Iceland. Descriptions and characteristics help you find possible matches and choose next steps. A search result alone does not confirm the species.

Straightforward advice

Free advice by phone often solves the problem

If the job does not call for a pest-control professional, we will say so clearly and point you towards the right solution free of charge. A satisfied customer is the best advertisement.

Practical guidance

Useful advice and honest answers

Here are answers to the questions we hear most often, along with practical ways to prevent a problem before it reaches your door. If you cannot find the answer, send us an enquiry. You can also call. Advice by phone is free.

First steps

When pests appear

I found a pest. What should I do first?

Send us an enquiry or a picture of the animal in a message to 897-5255. Include where you found it and what you noticed. You can also call for free advice.

Do not spray the area in the meantime. That can spread the problem and make identification harder. Take a photo of the creature directly from above if you can. A clear image speeds up accurate identification.

How much does pest control cost?

Advice by phone is free and is often enough to solve the problem. If a visit is needed, contact us for a quote.

We never sell unnecessary work. If the problem does not call for a pest-control professional, we say so directly and point you towards the right solution. A satisfied customer is the best advertisement.

When is the job not for a pest-control professional?

Sometimes the cause is not a pest but damp, a leak or a building defect. In that case the building may need repairs or improvements rather than pest treatment. We will say so clearly and point you towards the right solution, free of charge.

We also have a network of licensed plumbers, carpenters, masons and painters who can be called when repairs are needed. A property inspection using thermal cameras and moisture meters can locate the source.

How do I get rid of silverfish and stop them returning?

A large number of silverfish may require professional treatment with an approved insecticide. Silverfish reproduce in damp places such as bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Better ventilation and repairing leaks reduce humidity and make conditions less favourable. A large number of silverfish may also indicate hidden damp or a leak. In that case, it is worth having the property checked with moisture meters and a thermal camera.

How do I protect my home from mice in autumn?

As the weather cools, mice look for a way indoors. Walk around the building and seal gaps around pipes, doors and foundations. Mice can pass through openings only about six millimetres wide. Cover vents with rodent-proof mesh while preserving airflow.

Rodents most commonly enter through open doors. If you notice a mouse, contact us and we will talk you through the next steps.

How can I avoid bringing bed bugs home from a trip?

Inspect the bed at your accommodation before settling in. Lift the sheet and check the mattress seams and headboard. Dark marks on a mattress can be a warning sign. Finding a live or dead bed bug confirms that one is present. Ideally, keep your bag outside the room while you look for signs. If it is inside the room, keep it in the middle of the floor, away from furniture.

After returning home, put clothing that can withstand 60 °C in a dryer at 60 °C for at least 60 minutes. Items that cannot tolerate heat may be frozen at −18 °C or colder for at least four days, but the temperature must remain steady throughout. Contact us if you suspect bed bugs.

Biting midges in summer: what can I do?

Biting midges are summer visitors that tend to enter during calm evenings and nights. A fine-mesh insect screen on the bedroom window is the best defence. An ordinary screen will not stop insects this small. A fan also keeps the air moving, which midges avoid.

Close windows on still summer evenings, keep lights off beside open windows and cover your skin if you sit outside at dusk. Bites can cause itching and swelling, and reactions vary from person to person.

Should I have a home treated before moving in?

An inspection before moving in can reveal signs of pests. Treatment may be appropriate if needed and is often easier while the home is empty. Inspect used furniture before bringing it indoors.

You can also have a property inspected before buying or renting and receive an assessment with a certificate. The findings help you assess its condition.

Safety and businesses

Products, contracts and timing

Are the products dangerous to children, pets or food?

We use only approved products permitted for the intended use in Iceland. Product and method selection considers the surroundings, including food, children and pets.

Product approval does not mean a product is harmless in every situation. Follow the product instructions and the pest-control professional’s guidance on preparation, food and access for children and pets.

How does a monitoring contract work, and who needs one?

Food businesses need effective internal controls and pest prevention suited to their activities. Requirements for contracts and audits depend on the operation and the rules and standards that apply. We design and install prevention and monitoring systems, with monthly management and inspections in accordance with GÁMES (HACCP) and BRC Global Standards.

Regular monitoring supports prevention and helps identify problems early. A contract alone does not establish that every requirement has been met.

How long does it take to get rid of pests?

It depends on the species, extent and circumstances. Problems involving bed bugs or cockroaches may require follow-up. The length of a visit does not tell you when the problem will be resolved. We assess the next steps for each job.
